This blog collects the memoirs of Willem Justus  Havelaar, born in 1915 in Holland, who emigrated with his wife Johanna and their four children to Terrace, British Columbia, Canada in 1951.

His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren know him as “Harree”.

He qualified as a teacher in 1958 and worked in Victoria in that capacity until he retired in 1980. He and Johanna (“Moekie”, in this narrative) then moved to Denman Island and subsequently to Courtenay, BC, where he lives today (in the house they bought and quickly made their own) aged , at the time of this post, 96.
